March 1 - We have raised enough money to complete our playground project. The play equipment has been ordered and we have set a tentative install date of April 30th. Thank you so much to everyone who helped us get to this point.

What is Playground Fun for Everyone?

As you may know Barrhead Elementary School currently has three playgrounds available for its students and other children in the community. Unfortunately, the playground on the north side of the school was actually designed as a Junior High/High Elementary Fitness Circuit so it is not safe or appropriate for most of our students (it was moved directly into the elementary school area when school bus lanes changed). And, none of these playgrounds are currently wheelchair accessible. Since we want our children playing in a safe and fun environment, and since we have students in our population that are confined to a wheelchair, we feel it is necessary for us to make alterations to our playgrounds so that the children can play safely and that they can all play together.

To this end we are raising funds that will allow us to resurface our front playground in engineered wood fibre. This surface, although loose fill, “knits” together to form a stable and accessible area for wheelchairs and walkers. In addition, we are also adding a playhouse and other new play elements that are also wheelchair accessible.

On the north side of the school we will be installing a completely new playground. This equipment is designed specifically for children age 5-12. The current equipment will stay in place for use by the upper grades.

With all of these changes in place all around BES children will be playing on equipment that is both safe and engaging.
